STYLE FOCUS | Dark Romance, Leather Dresses & Skirts
Luxe leather jackets, handbags and shoes have been part of the style-conscious woman’s wardrobe for decades. But now leather is beginning to appear more and more in other garments too – whether as a touch of trim or making up the entire piece. Leather dresses started to appear on the catwalks of London, Paris, Milan and New York for Spring/Summer 2012 in bright, fresh colours. (See Bangstyle.com Trend Alert).
Now, for Autumn/Winter, the look is bigger than ever, and leather dresses have reverted their natural home – the shades of black and grey that are a key part of this season’s Dark Romance trend.

Whether it’s the influence of the Twilight films, the edgy eroticism of 50 Shades of Grey or the Scandi-Goth aesthetic of David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remake, there’s something of the night about this season’s hottest looks. Black and grey are the colours of the season, accented with rich jewel hues and stinging brights. Asymmetry and draping give garments unexpected new lines that are both edgy and flattering, while the 1980s influence is still clear in oversized silhouettes and the liberal application of glittery embellishment. These elements work together to create a look that’s tough but romantic, sombre but sparkling.
If you’ve never owned a leather skirt before, you’ll wonder how you coped without one. Leather skirts are so practical for winter: they’re warm, versatile and will take you from work to weekend to evening without breaking stride.
Muubaa’s drape leather skirt has a stretch waistband and a twisted, ruched shape that makes it both flattering and comfortable to wear, and is available in classic black leather or velvety suede with a hint of sparkle. Channel the spirit of the 2002 film Secretary and team your leather skirt with a dainty pussy-bow blouse, go for a tough take on the look with a Varsity-style blouson jacket, or dress it down with one of this season’s slouchy sweaters. Team it with a denim shirt for a dash of cowgirl chic, or with the cute Scandi-inspired knits that are bringing out our inner Sara Lund.
Leather dresses are far easier to wear than you might think. In black leather or metallic grey suede, Muubaa’s Sedona drape dress (below) has an asymmetric cut and cowl neckline that make it effortlessly flattering. Team it with python heels for a lethal evening look, or dress it down with flat knee boots for daytime.
The Muubaa Shelby is a suede T-shirt dress that will take you from the last glow of the Indian summer to the deepest days of winter. Wear it now with strappy heels, and layer it later with skinny jeans and a long-sleeved T (See Fashion Love Affair).
The Sofia (left) is the most fitted of Muubaa’s leather dresses, but its structure makes it surprisingly forgiving to wear. Accessorise it with this season’s accent brights to offset the gothic glamour of the look – orange is the It colour for bags this season, or try cobalt blue, violet or emerald green. A slick of red lipstick is the only other finishing touch you’ll need.
